Rites of Passage for Young Men

Welcome to Type3Life On the Grid, your monthly dose of real talk, bold challenges, and community-fueled momentum here to remind you that a Type3Life isn’t meant to be walked alone, it’s built through support, shared effort, and the belief that you’re capable of more.

In this first ever T3L newsletter we’re reflecting on our latest Type3Life men’s adventure and how we found ourselves in the midst of a good old fashioned Rite of Passage.

These will come out monthly, so keep your eyes open and please share these with anyone you know that could use a bit of community in their lives. Sign up or refer a buddy to these emails here

“Rites of passage, done well, can change the entire trajectory of a young man’s life. They offer so much more than a memory—they create transformation. ”

Last week, we wrapped up the Type3Life Colorado Precision Rifle Course—and something meaningful unfolded. For the first time, we had two 16-year-old young men on the course. This wasn’t a watered-down experience tailored for youth. They were in it with the rest of us—treated as equals, expected to pull their weight, and included in real conversations about life, responsibility, and what it means to show up fully as a man.

It wasn’t labeled as a rite of passage, but that’s exactly what it became.

These young men didn’t just complete a rifle course—they stepped across a threshold. One marked by challenge, community, confidence, and the presence of men willing to model strength, integrity, and vulnerability. They weren’t told how to be men. They were invited into a space where men do hard things together and tell the truth. And they responded—by rising to the occasion, listening deeply, and earning the respect of every man there, not because of their age, but because of how they showed up.

This experience reminded me how desperately our culture needs real rites of passage. Too many young men are growing up without one. They’re left to figure things out on their own and punished for their natural drive to test limits, seek meaning, and challenge themselves. But the truth is—young men don’t need lectures. They don’t need more rules. They need experiences. They need older men who see them as men-in-the-making who can take them under their collective wings and shape them to meet their potential as a man. And they need to be invited into something real—something that asks more of them than the world usually does.

Rites of passage, done well, can change the entire trajectory of a young man’s life. They offer so much more than a memory—they create transformation. Here are a few key benefits we witnessed firsthand last week:

  1. Clarity of Identity
Crossing a threshold gives a young man a distinct before and after. He moves from boyhood into something new—with a story and sense of self that sticks.

  2. Confidence Through Challenge
When he meets difficulty and pushes through, he gains a grounded, earned confidence—not from being told he’s special, but from proving to himself that he’s capable.

  3. Belonging to a Brotherhood
Being welcomed into the company of men—truly seen and respected—creates deep-rooted belonging. He realizes he’s not alone in this journey.

  4. Emotional Resilience
When a young man sees older men speak the truth about their lives, it gives him permission to feel without shame. He learns that real strength includes emotional depth.

  5. Responsibility and Ownership
More than anything, a rite of passage says, “You matter, and your choices matter.” It calls a young man into a deeper sense of ownership over his life and his impact.

That’s what we saw last week—two young men stepping into manhood not by title, but by trial. And it’s something we intend to continue.

If you’re a father or mentor who wants to create that kind of experience for the young man in your life—hit reply. Let’s talk about what’s possible.

Challenge. Community. Confidence.
