Frequently asked Questions

There are a few definitions of Type3Fun out there. Some say it’s the disastrous type of fun that’s not in fact fun at all because people are getting hurt or lost.

That’s not what a Type3Life trip is all about. Type3Fun was just the kernel of the idea that doing hard things helps you grow.

Our trips are actually fun, but they will be challenging and push participants outside of their comfort zones. It’s intentional to make these trips a challenge in some sense, and by the end you’ll see why. The confidence and tools we gain from overcoming difficulty with a supporting community around you is empowering.

Safety is our number one concern though and no one will be pushed past their limits. These trips are meant to be enjoyable in the end, that’s our goal.

Living a Type3Life is an ethos we aspire to, one which was born out of the idea of the hardships of Type3Fun. However, the way we build this belief in our participants is drastically different than actually risking it all in some hair-brained scenario.

Type1Fun: This is the type of fun that’s easy and enjoyable. There’s no hardship, its just pure enjoyment. Going to a ball game or skiing a powder day at the resort, going for a short hike, these are Type1Fun.

Type2Fun: When your adventures get tough this is Type2Fun. There’s sweat, maybe a bit of fear at times, but there will be plenty of laughter and jokes. This is mountaineering, white-water rafting, and single track riding in the backcountry. You may find yourself out after dark, or carrying a buddies pack because he’s too tired to make it over the next pass with it on his own back. You know where you are going, and are confident you’ll arrive there. This is Type2Fun.

Type3Fun: When the going gets tough, intended plans go out the window, and it’s down to pure grit fun. become Type3 in our opinion. It’s more than bad weather and long days. There’s usually a component of the unknown, and a feeling of what the did I get myself into. Type3Fun leads to growth and introspection though, it makes you think about your actions, how you overcome, how you plan, and how you react to situations in front of you. Once out the other side, you can usually look back and say, damn, I made it, we made it. It tends to require support from community (adventure buddies, family, friends, co-workers) and bonds those communities tightly. Type3Fun is the stories you tell for decades and come with a lesson of some sort in the end.

At Type3Life our goal is to enable the growth that Type3Fun puts into motion, but through adventures designed around the slightly less dangerous Type2Fun. We’ll push you, it will be hard, but there will be laughs, bonding, memories, and maybe a touch of self doubt, but these trips are not intended to tip into the unknown of Type3Fun.

Type3Life is an organization specifically designed to help men gain community and confidence through challenge and adventure. If you think one of our trips can help you, reach out and we can discuss which adventure may be right for you.

Type3Life is an organization with a mission specifically aimed at helping men.

There are plenty of programming in the marketplace similar to what we are creating designed for women. There’s a surprising lack of programming for men however. This is one of the main problems we are addressing at Type3Life.

Just like how women’s only programming aims at creating a safe space for women to talk about issues specific to their lives, we want to create that space for men to open up and be vulnerable if needed.

Helping men create community with other guys is core to our mission to help men navigate the world confidently. To do this we need to show men they can struggle, overcome, and open up with other men.

Our Private Trips can accommodate a mixed group, so if that’s something you’re interested in please reach out at info@type3life.com and we can talk about our private and custom trip options.

If you are a woman looking for an opportunity similar to ours, check out Adventures In Good Company, they are fantastic operators with a wide variety of trips all around the world! Or if you want a shorter or local experience here in Colorado check out Rocky Mountain Hiking Company. Just let either of them know you heard about them through Type3Life.

No. Although the core of a Type3Life trip is adventurous wilderness travel, there’s a lot more to what we offer. These trips are designed to help men find motivation, overcome physical and mental challenges they face, create healthy community with other men. The goal is to come back to the front country with a new outlook of confidence and mission.

The goal of Type3Life curriculum is to push men past their comfort zone. We do this because overcoming adversity is a great way to gain confidence in ourselves. We will overcome challenges as a group and learn that surrounding ourselves with a supportive community is an advantage to trying to go it alone, both in the backcountry at back at home.

Even though these trips can be challenging, any guy can come. There’s no experience needed, just the right attitude and willingness to work hard.

The use of alcohol is restricted and the use of all drugs and non-prescription medications is prohibited on all Type3Life trips. These substances could negatively impact individual and team performance on the trip and can create significant safety and health risks for all team members. Discovery of the possession or unauthorized use of alcohol or non-prescription medication in any instance is cause for immediate dismissal from the trip and return home at the participant’s expense. Alcohol use at closing ceremonies or other times may be allowed at the discretion and supervision of the on-site Type3Life staff. Under no circumstances will alcohol use be authorized during any backcountry portion of a Type3Life trip.

Please see our Terms and Conditions page for all our cancelation, refund, transfer, and COVID-19 policies.

Type3Life aims to have groups of 12 or fewer participants with 1-3 Trips Leaders on each trip.

At Type3Life, we recognize that there is a spectrum of data interpretation, opinions and emotions regarding Covid-19 vaccinations. As an apolitical, inclusive organization with the goal of positively impacting men across the world, we are singularly focused on applying our available resources to create and execute the best transformational adventure trips that we can. To this end, Type3Life encourages you to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and up-to-date with any boosters you are eligible to receive prior to arriving at their trip starting location.

Yes. Type3Life requires all participants to provide their health insurance information to attend a trip. It is your responsibility to make sure your insurance will cover you for the duration of the trip.

At the time of application, participants will sign up for their trip online and pay a 50% deposit; payment in full at the time of sign up is encouraged and will result in a 5% discount on the total trip cost.

After signup and payment, each participant will receive a welcome packet to the email address provided during signup. The welcome packet includes trip details, pre-trip preparations and communications, and links to additional forms that each participant is required to complete before their spot on the trip is officially secured. It is critical that these forms are filled out and signed as soon as possible to ensure your spot on your desired trip.

Once Type3Life has received the participant’s mandatory forms, a Type3Life Staff will review participant paperwork and confirm their position in the trip. A screening call may be conducted by a Type3Life staff member with the participant to seek additional information on an as-needed basis. A group preparation call will take place between 10 days out and departure for the trip with all trip participants and Trip Leaders.

There is a risk management consciousness that pervades Type3Life and indeed, guides every step of our operations. Risk management has always been and will continue to be, a priority at Type3Life. Nevertheless, no matter how many systems an organization employs, and no matter how stringently those systems are followed, incidents will happen. We can not, nor can anyone, reduce that possibility to zero.

We accept risk as an integral part of the learning process and of the environments through which we travel, but we do not seek risk for the sake of risk. Our Type3Experiences have no handrails, emergency situations can be complex and take time to resolve, and participants on our trips must accept the fact that risk of injury or death exists during wilderness travel and recreation in remote areas.

Our trips are for men of all shapes and sizes and there will be people with different levels of ability, health, fitness, comfortability, and experience at each program. We are here to support you and help you have the best experience possible!

That being said, a pre-trip exercise plan is recommended and a baseline level of physical fitness is expected. However, our goal is to challenge each individual participant, and we’ll find ways to even the playing field no matter your fitness level.

No. We will have guides and Trip Leader on every trip to teach you proper techniques for all required activities. What’s needed is an open mind and the willingness to try new things, overcome challenges and fears, and give it 110% effort.

That is up to you. The challenges we design can make some feelings rise to the surface at times fairly easily. It’s natural to talk about fears and doubts and these usually relate to struggles we face back home. We invite everyone to open up and see how being honest with other men can build support and communities we can depend and rely on.

Type3Life trips are an opportunity to take a break from everyday life and stressors to connect with self and others in an intentional and meaningful way. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that we hope you’ll want to be present for. We ask you to refrain from using your cell phone for any purpose other than to take personal pictures and videos. Please leave your other technology (e.g. tables and computers) at home or if you need to bring them, leave them in your lodge room.

By the way, our Trip Leaders will be equipped with cameras and GoPros to record the memories for you and edit a post-trip video for you to share with your friends and family.

Yes, of course. We encourage you to invite your existing community of male friends to the greatest extent possible as long as they meet our eligibility requirements. Even more, providing a referral will earn you a 10% discount on your trip.

Most of our trips are out in the backcountry, so the majority of the time you’ll be paired up and sleeping in tents in groups of 2. When in the front country, lodging will vary from single rooms, to double rooms, to bunk rooms. If you have a specific concern or need regarding room sharing with another person, please reach out to a member of the Type3Life staff.

We recognize that everybody and every body is different. We will work with each person individually to understand their needs and to make adjustments as needed. Please relay this information in your Participant Health Form, and on your screening call prior to your trip’s departure so we can better understand your needs and we can work to find the right program option for you.

Let’s first acknowledge that we would be more surprised if you weren’t anxious! Many participants have never done the activities outlined in the trip descriptions or been to the places our trips travel. So most participants are starting at the same level of experience. Everyone is nervous, everyone is wondering what to expect.

The Type3Life staff will be with you every step of the way and we overcome the challenges as a team, always. All you have to do is show up, give your best effort and understand it may be challenging at times.

While we want to accept everyone on our trips we are also committed to an appropriate Trip Leader to participant ratio, permitting limits for the sensitive areas where we operate, and other operating restrictions mean we cannot always accommodate every person on their desired trip in a given timeframe.

If you are interested in joining a trip’s waitlists you can pay your deposit or pay in full and if a position opens you will be slated into that trip. A Type3Life staff member will reach out to you to see if there are other trip dates or options you may be interested in.

Type3Life waitlists are not necessarily first-come, first served. We will prioritize placing waitlisted individuals on trips based on their activity during the pre-trip process (for example, completing required forms), and considerations based on participant screening.

Electronic communication with friends and family is allowed before and after the trip. There will be no communication during our front country training days or backcountry portions. If there are emergency communications that need to be relayed please let Type3Life staff know prior to trip departure. If there is an emergency during the trip, Type3Life trip leaders are equipped with satellite communications to facilitate emergency response and contact/coordination with friends and family listed as emergency contacts.

We recommend all of our participants look into purchasing third-party trip insurance to protect your financial investment of trip costs, airfare and/or emergency evacuation. Trip insurance options are widely available.

There are many options for third-party insurers. Here is a great review of over 20 providers you can choose from:

*Type3Life does not represent or endorse any third party trip insurance options.

Yes, you can. The Type3Life Trip Protection Plan which protects your investment should you cancel prior to the trip start for a confirmed medical or family emergency only. This plan will not offer refunds for cancellations due to schedule changes, lack of motivation, work conflicts, unreported pre-existing conditions, participants who do not show for trip start, or concerns related to COVID-19.

The plan costs $250 and can be purchased directly through Type3Life using our online payment portal and must be purchased by your balance due date. This pre-trip cancelation plan is available for purchase until your balance due date only, and cannot be purchased after the balance due date noted in your Type3Life online portal.

In order for Type3Life to process a refund for a medical emergency, we require a written letter from your physician verifying the medical emergency at the time of your cancelation to qualify for a refund.

Once all criteria have been met, Type3Life will refund all costs up to 15 days prior to trip departure with the exception of the $150 non-refundable processing fee and the cost of the Protection Plan.

The majority of the trip will consist of primarily basic camping and backpacking-style meals. If you have any dietary restrictions, we’ll review that with you prior to the trip to make sure we have you covered. The night before we depart and the day of our arrival back to the front country, we’ll dine out at local restaurants.

If you would like to bring your own snacks along, that is highly encouraged. We all have treats that we enjoy and bringing something special is a great way to keep motivation high and not have to rely on the group’s schedule for your munchies.

Currently, we do not offer financial assistance or scholarships but hope to provide this option in the future.

No. These are not intended to be wilderness therapy. Although some of the activities may be therapeutic, this is not therapy. Our intention here is to build community and create bonds that help men connect with one another.

If you need therapeutic resources please reach out and we will do our best to point you in the right direction.
